What is and what does Hoppenbank e.V.?
Hoppenbank e.V. is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to offenders from Bremen, Germany. We focus on preventing imprisonment, providing counseling in prison and transition management. We offer services in the areas of housing, work, addiction counseling, social participation and services for incarcerated parents.
What is the mission of Hoppenbank e.V.?
Our stated goal is to support those affected by crime, to reduce social problems and to highlight crime as a problem for society as a whole.
What is the story of Hoppenbank e.V.?
We were founded in 1971 and have developed steadily since then. We currently have almost 70 employees and support around 2,500 clients per year.
What is your background?
I studied social sciences for my bachelor’s degree and social work for my master’s degree. I am the manager of the non-profit organization Hoppenbank e.V. I have supported various Erasmus projects and am a volunteer on the association council of the welfare association in Bremen.

I want to ensure that children in difficult life situations receive the support they need to lead happy and fulfilling lives.
Why you decided to organize GWMD?
GWMD is a valuable project to support the children of prisoners and to establish valuable contact between parents and children. It supports our existing offers and gives us an opportunity to possibly achieve a permanent basis by setting a good example.
What is involved in organising an event like this?
We are implementing the project together with the prison and social workers from our association.
What are the reactions of the children?
The children really appreciate the project and enjoy the time together. They forget the prison environment and re-establish contact with their parents.

What are the reactions of the imprisoned parents?
The parents really appreciate the extra visiting time. These are normal situations; they can see what their children are currently concerned with. This is very special and important for their joint development.
What are the reactions of the imprisoned parents’ family?
They also value the time, contribute well and support the project.
Can you tell us some meaningful episodes occurred during the event?
The reunion of parents and children is always very special. It creates very deep emotions.
